Police spokesperson, Thabo Covane, says Wansbury told police that four shots were fired in the direction of his vehicle by a man known to him on Monday night. The suspect was allegedly accompanied by his bodyguard when they accosted Wansbury at the corner of Maluti Avenue and Kenilworth Road in the Groenvlei area. Two of the bullets hit the businessman on the thigh and the abdomen.
Despite being hit, the businessman managed to alert police and drive himself to the Mediclinic Hospital.
Covane says Wansbury couldn’t provide a detailed statement at the time because he had to be taken to theatre for an operation urgently. Mediclinic Bloemfontein’s spokesperson, Barbara Steenkamp, says the businessman is still in the hospital’s critical care unit following the shooting incident but is stabilising.
The businessman is the owner of the Sandstone Sleeper Estate outside Bloemfontein and Tents for Africa.
