‘Know your number’ on World Hypertension Day

World Hypertension Day was on 16 May 2024 and Unu Health, a leading digital health platform, is encouraging South Africans to “Know your number”.  This initiative focuses on monitoring one’s blood pressure, a key hypertension factor.

According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of South Africa, hypertension affects one in three adults in South Africa. It contributes significantly to the nation’s lower life expectancy and high rates of cardiovascular diseases.

“Knowing your number isn’t just about seeing a value, it’s about understanding what that value means for your health,” said the CEO of Unu Health, Tania Joffe.

“As hypertension continues to be a major challenge in South Africa, understanding and monitoring your blood pressure is more crucial than ever. Our digital tools, available as an app, enable users to check their blood pressure via their smartphone, empowering individuals to manage their health proactively,” Joffe further mentioned.

Joffe continued to encourage integrating technology into the health system. “By integrating technology into everyday health management, we reduce the strain on physical healthcare facilities and ensure that more people can access the care they need without delay,” Joffe continued.

Joffe concluded that Unu Health’s main aim is to transform digital devices into powerful health management tools, making monitoring your health accessible.
