KnitWits gear up for ‘secret scarf mission’

Community members are invited to join the KnitWits on Thursday at Hoffman Square.

“KnitWits for Madiba” branches from across the country have been knitting like crazy in preparation for a 67 Blankets knit-a-thon of note. South Africa’s KnitWits are churning out numerous scarves for the 67 Blankets Secret Scarves Shhh…!! Mission, popularly known as SSS, which will be taking place at Hoffman Square on Thursday 13 July at 15:00.
67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Free State ambassador, Lindiwe Mnguni, said they have exceeded their previous target of 300 scarves. “So far we have 459 scarves, we have raised our target from 300 to 500 because we saw that we have reached 300 very quickly, so we thought, why stop there,” she boasted.
One group from the Free State KnitWits is currently knitting the scarves, while another group is busy making the labels that will be put on the scarves. The label, which says “I’m not lost, if you’re cold please take me home”, will be attached to each scarf.
On Sunday, 16 July 2017, the KnitWits will also be handing over 50 blankets to the Itekeng Centre, a centre for children with disabilities in Ficksburg. Mnguni said the volunteers at the centre would also like to start knitting. “We will also be having an activation, teaching them how to knit and crochet, starting their own KnitWits group in Ficksburg.”
They also plan on donating 130 blankets to old age homes and an orphanage in Bloemfontein. Mnguni said they have been collecting blankets all year round, and they are still taking in more. “We need the blankets all year round so that we can have as many as we can. We have different programmes so that people do not get bored of knitting the same thing all year, for example scarves of 80 x 80-cm squares, or full blankets.”
Members of the community are invited to join the KnitWits on Thursday, when they will be tying scarves to trees for people in need. For more information or if you want to contribute to the initiative, you can contact Lindiwe Mnguni at 079-693-1333 or visit her Facebook page. – SEITHATI SEMENOKANE
