KFC Langenhoven Park hosted a tour of their kitchen on Thursday to demonstrate exactly how freshly fried their chicken really is. Bloemfontein Courant joined the tour and was given a first-hand demonstration of food preparation from fridge to takeaway box.
It was obvious that KFC’s food whether it is a drumstick or Zinger Chutney burger is prepared with care, attention to detail and the proper safety measures. Chicken thighs, wings, and drumsticks from a popular distributor are dusted in the famous 11 herbs and spices.
According to Operations Director, Mmenyana Ranku, no brine is used on the chicken in order to keep the taste uncompromised. The chicken pieces are flipped 10 times in the flour to ensure that they are thoroughly coated, the same way that KFC founder Colonel Harland Sanders did it decades ago. It is then fried for exactly 14 min and 30 sec for optimum crispiness.
“We wanted to show that we make chicken the hard way. Everything is handmade and fresh within our restaurants. We invited the community to see exactly what happens behind closed doors in our kitchen,” explained Ranku.
Once the chicken has been prepared pieces are only permitted to stay in a warm oven for about an hour and a half. Guests were able to make their own burgers and wraps while staff prepared breakfast orders with fresh eggs and vegetables among others. “Food quality is extremely important to us. It is something that we do not compromise on because fresh ingredients make the best tasting food,” said Ranku.
The director stated that complaints of slow service at the KFC branch would be addressed by management. “There is no reason for service to be compromised. This is something that I will take up with the restaurant. The way that we have prepped production at KFC should ensure good service, no matter what you order,” said Ranku. “If service is compromised, please, do let us know,” she added. – Nomaqhawe Mtebele
