The city manager of the Mangaung Metro, Sibongile Mazibuko, says water released from Lesotho's Katse Dam will reach Mangaung this weekend.
The Department of Water and Sanitation granted approval for the release of water from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project this Monday. Spokesperson Sputnik Ratau says water was released at Clarens. Ratau says with the release they are attempting to address the water challenges in nearby Free State municipalities.
Meanwhile, Mazibuko has urged Mangaung residents to adhere to water restrictions. She was speaking at a media briefing at the Bloemfontein City Hall, this morning.
Mazibuko says the Katse Dam water will also assist the current water crisis in Thaba Nchu, which has been without water for a week. She says the municipality doesn't have enough reservoirs and when they receive additional water, they can't store it.
She however explains that a new reservoir was built in Botshabelo last year and they will be building one in Thaba Nchu this year. – Refilwe Gaeswe
