The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation says the struggle stalwart who died this morning at the Donald Gordon Hospital in Johannesburg, following surgery to the brain, will be buried according to Muslim religious rights. The Foundation’s Zaakirah Vade says details and arrangements of his funeral will be made public in due course.
She thanked South Africans for their continues support over the last few weeks. “We hope South Africans will continue with Ahmaed Kathrada’s legacy going forward into the future. He was an activist for non-racialism. She says he actively promoted youth development, leadership, constitutionalism and Human Rights. “That’s the legacy we want to uphold.”
Kathrada had an illustrious political career having served between 1994 and ’99 as the parliamentary counsellor to late President Nelson Mandela. He was born on 21 August 1929 in rural Schweizer-Reneke and was introduced to politics as a young boy when he joined a non-racial youth club run by the Young Communist League. – Christal-lize Muller
