Feedlots & Farms

From our humble beginning in 1974, managing a herd of less than 100 head of cattle on the Karan family farm outside Heidelberg, we now accommodate a herd of over 140 000, situated on 2 330 hectares of farmland, making it the largest feedlot in Africa. Our business has grown to become the largest integrated beef production operation on the African continent. We can accommodate over 210 000 head of cattle across our feedlots, farms, and holding stations. Producing quality beef is at the core of everything we do, and this focus and dedication to quality has driven us to become one of the world’s largest fully integrated beef producers.

The high quality of our herd is ensured through strong and lasting relationships that we maintain with our breeder suppliers. This relationship starts with the selection and collection of their best weaner calves, to the individual monitoring and feedback on each animal from the time it arrives at the feedlot, to sharing of the latest trends, technology, and breeding methods. Karan Beef preferred breeds include:

As part of our growth, our operation has expanded to include the Nigel Farm. We established the farm to grow crops used in the production of our superior cattle feed. A substantial part of the farm is used for our backgrounding programme where the calves are grass-fed before transitioning into our feedlot.

Feedmill

Our feedmill facility is the largest and one of the most modern of its kind in the world, using state-of-the-art technology to formulate feed recipes from data collected around the world.

It can produce up to 1 740 tons of specially formulated grain-based recipes and the feed is sourced from across Southern Africa to ensure a reliable supply of the best quality raw ingredients.

Our feed rations are grain and grain by-product based, with no tallow or animal by-products. For energy maize and maize, by-products are used with grass hay, wheat straw, and sugar cane bagasse as roughage. Molasses is used to aid the mixing process while standard trace mineral and vitamin supplement is added. Protein is supplied by use of cotton seed, maize gluten, and wheat bran.

Abattoir

Our world-class abattoir and processing facility is situated in Balfour and is key to our integrated beef production. The facility allows for highly streamlined processing of up to 2 040 cattle per day. We strongly believe in the humane handling of cattle and have therefore implemented a system developed by global experts for all facets of our operation.

Our Balfour facility includes an internationally certified deboning plant, equipped to process up to 300 tons of beef products per shift. It empowers us to produce a full range of premium-quality primal cuts for our ever-growing client base.

Further, we have stringent systems of maintenance and control in place that comply with the highest international standards in health, hygiene, and food safety:

  • ISO 14001

All our processes are HALAAL accredited in South Africa by SANHA (South African National Halaal Authority) and NIHT (National Independent Halaal Trust) and internationally by:

  • MS1500: Halal food general requirements (Malaysia)
  • SHAS: SANHA halal assurance system (RSA)
  • GSO 993: Animal Slaughtering Requirements According to Islamic Rules (Gulf states)
  • GSO 2055-1: HALAL FOOD – Part 1: General Requirements (Gulf states)

We continuously conduct audits and have zero tolerance for sub-standard practices. As a result, we minimise any risk of bacterial cross-contamination throughout our facility.

To store our high-quality beef products, we established a state-of-the-art cold storage facility that allows us to freeze and chill our beef products before distributing them through our extensive logistics and supply chain network. The use of cutting-edge technology throughout the storage facility and within our supply chain is the final part of our gate-to-plate promise, ensuring we secure our position as the largest, fully integrated beef producer in Africa.

Distribution Centre

Most of our product range is distributed directly from our Abattoir in Balfour to customers throughout South Africa and abroad. We also distribute to our Sales Depot in City Deep so that we can focus on delivering smaller quantities to local customers and encourage direct pick-ups.

Social Responsibility

We have an ongoing commitment to social upliftment and the preservation of our environment. The Tokolohong Agricultural Village was developed on land donated by the Karan family to provide staff and workers from the surrounding areas with homes, and communal areas that enable them to grow vegetables and maintain livestock, thereby empowering them to become self-sufficient.

Environment

Our nature sanctuary on the Heidelberg farm hosts the widest collection of waterfowl in South Africa and is also home to 10 species of antelope. Our wetland plays a vital role in the farm’s management and acts as a natural bio-filtration system. It allows us to preserve a valuable part of our rich heritage and to address environmental concerns naturally.

We are in full compliance with the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards and are audited every year. Our dedicated ISO department and professional consultants ensure KARAN BEEF’s legal compliance.

We place great value on animal welfare and are affiliated with (WESSA) and several other environmental forums to provide sustainable beef products
