Kalkfontein bulk water scheme – phase one launched today

The Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, has launched phase one of a bulk water scheme at Kalkfontein Dam in the Free State.

This comes after intensified water restrictions in the province.

The spokesperson for the department of water and sanitation, Sputnik Ratau, says the bulk water scheme will supply water to Trompsburg, Gariep Dam, Springfontein, Bethulie, Philippolis, Jagersfontein, Fauresmith, Edenburg and Reddersburg. Ratau says the project will be completed in three phases.

The cost of over a billion rand will cover the dam wall, pipeline, boreholes, and reservoir.

“This is phase one that has been completed, but when we look at phase two, it includes things like reticulation which takes a shorter period. When one look at projects regarding water and sanitation they are normally multi-year projects, so I would venture that the next phase will be completed in the next three years or so,” Ratau says.
