Two primary school learners from St. Andrew’s School, Ethan Style (grade 2) and Alistair Maycock (grade 5), have been selected to take part in the Motocross African Nations Continental Championships. The championships are taking place in Marrakech, Morocco, in October.
Alistair’s parents, Doug and Kate, explained that they got their son involved in motocross to keep him entertained during the Covid-19 lockdown, and then the bug bit. Ethan, on the other hand, became involved at age four, through his father, Christopher, who is a passionate dirt bike rider.
Both boys’ parents are involved in their sons’ successes on the track. “Racing is an integral part of our family and we attend all the races together,” said Janine Style, Ethan’s mother. “We make a great team and have formed the most amazing friendships with the other parents and kids,” she added.
Kate Maycock also stated: “Dad fixes and sorts out Alistair’s bike, and takes him to all his races, while Mom is there for support and lots of prayers that he doesn’t hurt himself.”
Ethan explained what he enjoys most about Motocross, saying: “[My favourite] is to be able to jump the biggest jumps on the track.”The young rider is also very excited to be heading to Morocco to represent South Africa.
Alistair explained excitedly: “I love the jumps!” He also called his opportunity to go to the championships an “amazing feeling” and added that he is excited for the races and the food in Morocco.
The two young racers have similar dreams for their respective motocross journeys. Alistair wants to be the best in the world, and Ethan wants to be a world champion one day. Both boys are on the right track to achieve these dreams, given their opportunity in Marrakech.
The Styles and Maycocks have started a fundraiser to help get their boys to the championships, and anyone who can lend a hand can inbox the families on Facebook to get involved.
