The Free State Department of Education has confirmed that the Principal of Jimmy Roos School Isak “Sakkie” Joubert has been suspended following a video allegedly showing him attacking a learner. This as they investigate claims of abuse at the reform school for boys, just outside of Dewetsdorp, in the Free State.
The 62-year-old principal appeared before the Dewetsdorp Magistrate’s Court on a charge of common assault on Wednesday. According to Education spokesperson, Howard Ndaba, due to the nature of the video, the principal was suspended with immediate effect, pending the investigation.
“He was suspended yesterday but other things have started cropping up, like racism. He allegedly calls people the k-word and is conducting a reign of terror at the school,” explained Ndaba.
In a tweet on Wednesday, from an account of the MEC of Education Dr Tate Makgoe, a statement was made that issues at the school would be thoroughly investigated and then appropriate action would be taken.
“Whether the suspension will be permanent will depend on what the investigation will reveal. We still adhere to the principle that people are innocent until proven guilty,” said Ndaba.
Courant reported earlier this week that Joubert was allegedly recorded striking a learner a number of times after pulling the 15-year-old out of bed, at the school hostel last year.
Joubert denied hitting the minor but expressed that, although he had a broom in his hand, he only pushed him once.
