Jazz evenings move to Coco C

Bokani Dyer

The popular Bloemfontein Jazz Evenings, which was founded in 2015 by pianist Andile Qongqo and saxophonist Lesley Jennings, has found a new home at Coco C at Loch Logan Waterfront.
And to celebrate this new milestone, the organisers will host a live concert by The Bokani Dyer Trio, supported by The Andile Q Trio, on Saturday 3 June 2017. The concert is made possible by the Concerts SA Mobility Fund.
In 2015 Qongqo and Jennings identified a void in Bloemfontein and the Free State at large for quality live jazz performances. The Bloemfontein Jazz Evenings was initiated to give local jazz artists an opportunity to perform jazz locally on a professional standard without having to go through too much effort to produce their own shows.
The initiative has grown to become the Bloemfontein Jazz Movement, and now hosts a series of high-quality jazz artists from our local community and national artists on tour. The initiative started at the Windmill Casino and moved to Pacofs Downstage in 2016. This year’s season is being housed by Coco C Function Venue, which boasts a sophisticated setting with a white baby grand piano for the perfect, laid back jazz experience.
The main attraction for the first show of the season, Bokani Dyer, is a Motswana-South African pianist, composer and producer.
He has won multiple awards, including the Standard Bank Young Artist of the Year for Jazz in 2011.
His sold out shows at the Vortex in London (2014) were described as “thrilling” and “superlative” (jazzwisemagazine.com).
Recent career highlights include playing at the opening of the London Jazz Festival (2015), with his Trio at Jazzahead in Bremen, Germany (2016), headlining the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (2015), an artistic residency at the Bird’s Eye jazz club in Basel, Switzerland (2014) and performing at the launch of the SA/Russia Seasons in Moscow & St Petersburg (2016).
Dyer’s music is appreciated for its creativity and emotional depth, with “soulful notes, spiritual tones, sophisticated concepts, and simply presented notions”.
Tickets to the show, which will start at 19:30, are sold at R200 (R250 at the door).
