IPID to investigate De Bruin shooting

A case of murder, attempted murder and house robbery has been registered at Heidedal SAPS. This after 24-year-old Jaron de Bruin, the son of former Mangaung councillor, was fatally shot during a house robbery.

De Bruin was shot by a police officer after a house robbery went wrong. The incident that took place in the early hours of Tuesday morning left another suspect injured whilst the third made a run for it. According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, the shooting by the police officer will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Local police responded to a shooting incident in Paper Street, Heidedal and upon arrival found two males lying on the ground in the yard. De Bruin was found with a bullet wound to the chest and was declared dead on the scene. The other 30-year-old suspect was shot in the legs, taken to Pelonomi Hospital for treatment, and arrested after he had been discharged.

“Preliminary investigation has revealed that the two suspects were shot after they had allegedly broken into a police officer’s house. A Plasma TV that belongs to the police officer was found lying on the ground. The vehicle which was used by the suspects, was confiscated after it had been found without registration numbers and disc. Further investigation revealed it that it belonged to a girlfriend of one of the suspects,” said Makhele.

The arrested suspect is soon to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s court on a charge of house robbery.
