A multi-disciplinary Vala Umgodi operation targeting illegal mining in the Free State has led to multiple arrests and the seizure of contraband, explosives, and even components of a South African National Defence Force (SANDF) uniform.
According to Free State police spokesperson Mahlomola Kareli, the operations were conducted between 17 and 19 June 2025 in Vierfontein and Theunissen, in collaboration with mine security personnel.
“On 19 June, a joint operation with mine security in Vierfontein resulted in the arrest of four suspects,” said Kareli. “Two females were arrested for trespassing, while one man was detained for contravention of the Immigration Act. A fourth suspect was arrested after we found an illegal firearm, dagga, suspected gold-bearing material, and parts of an SANDF uniform locked inside his personal locker.”
On 18 June, during a special patrol, the Vala Umgodi reaction team discovered a concealed hole on mine premises in Vierfontein. “Inside the hole, officers found sealed food parcels and explosive detonators,” Kareli said. “No arrests have yet been made, and investigations are continuing.”
In a separate operation in Theunissen at around 18:00 the same day, officers discovered a sleeping site used by suspected illegal miners. Two men were arrested, and mining-related items and food were confiscated.
The day before, on 17 June, police arrested three men, aged between 32 and 45, at a Theunissen mine after they were found with suspected gold-bearing material.
“These efforts form part of our ongoing commitment to protect communities and safeguard the country’s mineral resources,” Kareli concluded. “Further arrests are likely as investigations proceed.”
