Operation Vala Umgodi proactive and combat operators is forcing underground illegal miners at the Kopanong Mine to abandon their illicit mining activities and surrender to authorities to be arrested.

South African Police Service, other role players such as the South African National Defence Force, the Department of Home Affairs and Private Security Companies, as stakeholders, have seen food supplies to underground illegal miners cut as foodstuffs are intercepted and seized.

Lieutenant Colonel Thabo Covane has confirmed that three suspects, aged between 25 and 37, were arrested at the Kopanong Mine and that gold-bearing amalgam was seized from their possession.

“Actions continued in the Beatrix Mine area as operators patrolled the mining area on foot, by vehicle and with the help of drone pilots. The combat team held observation and way-lay. Two males were spotted and as the teams closed-in on them, the suspects propelled themselves and plunged down the old mine shaft or opening using a rope,” Covane mentioned.

Covane further confirmed that the team then recovered a pistol, tinned fish, beans and instant porridge as well as dried leaves of dagga believed to fetch profit estimated at R12 000 when sold to underground illegal miners.

“Ten undocumented persons were arrested for Contravention of the Immigration Act, all suspects will appear in court soon,” Covane concluded.
