Illegal fireworks can be reported

SABRINA DEAN
Pet owners are being urged to take precautions to ensure their animals are not traumatized by New Year’s fireworks and crackers. SPCA Bloemfontein spokesperson Reinette Meyer says the celebration frenzy causes massive problems every year, even though it is illegal to shoot off fireworks. She says residents can report illegal use of fireworks. She urges pet owners to keep animals indoors in a safe place and also consider speaking to a vet about a tranquilizer or sedative to help keep pets calm. She says dogs, cats and other animals are easily traumatized because their extremely sensitive hearing makes a cracker sound like a bomb explosion.
