Bloemfontein – The University of Cape Town Ikeys were crowned the 2014 Varsity Cup Champions last night, after stealing the title from the North West University Pukke right at the death in Potchefstroom.
The side from Cape Town scored three tries in the last five minutes to beat Pukke 39-33 and add to their 2011 title.
Tries from Michael Botha, Dean Grant and Nathan Nel saw the Cape side stage one of the greatest comebacks in the seven-year history of the competition and leave the capacity crowd at the Fanie du Toit Sports Grounds stunned.
Following the match Ikeys captain Liam Slatem said they backed themselves from the word go.
In the curtain raiser to the big final, the University of the Free States’ Heimat beat Patria 20-12 to win the prestigious Koshuis rugby or Residents league title.
