How to sleep your way to better health

As a sound therapist, Thabiso “Damo” Montse has worked with several clients who struggle to sleep at night. He said that people don’t always realise that getting a good night’s sleep is crucial for overall health and well-being.

“Lack of sleep can lead to a wide range of physical and mental health issues, which can include irritability, poor concentration, a weakened immune system, and an increased risk of chronic diseases.

On the other hand, a good night’s sleep can help improve mood, memory, and overall cognitive function,” explained Montse. Montse advised that there are several natural ways to relax and calm your mind before bedtime.

“Some effective techniques include deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, meditation, aromatherapy, and avoiding screens and stimulating activities before bedtime.

Creating a bedtime routine and ensuring a comfortable sleep environment can also promote relaxation and improve sleep quality,” he expressed.

Montse further explained that by relaxing your muscles during the day, one can also relax the mind at night.

“Try breathing exercises or snuggling up with a weighted blanket. You can read a good book, use incense that will induce sleep or try to relax your mind. Avoid sleeping with your cell-phone around you,” concluded Montse
