“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,” said the late South African President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
Aunya Moloisane, Managing Director of Optimi, stated that Mandela Month presents an opportunity for people to remember and honour Madiba’s legacy and says it cannot be done without acknowledging the importance he placed on education.
Moloisane said not having a Matric or National Senior Certificate (NSC) closes doors to various opportunities, more than it opens them as the Department of Basic Education estimates that less than a third of South African adults have obtained their matric certificate.
“Without a matric, even those who find work are less likely to be promoted, and entrepreneurs interested in running their own companies often find it difficult to secure venture capital,” added the MD of Optimi.
Aunya Moloisane shared how to take the long walk to freedom through education:
Adult Education and Training (AET)
According to Moloisane, AET is meant for adults that want to obtain their matric as it provides people with the fundamentals of learning and is also for adults who do not have any formal education background.
Moloisane further added that the AET prepares students for the General Education and Training Certificate.
Foundational Learning Competence (FLC)
The MD of Optimi also stated that the FLC is a part qualification that works as a bridge for AET and the Amended Senior Certificate (ASC).
Amended Senior Certificate (ASC)
Moloisane said that an ASC is an equivalent to the NSC as it is registered as NQF Level 4.
“This Mandela Month, let’s prioritise Mandela’s belief in the power of education and strive to make a matric qualification possible for all,” added Aunya Moloisane.
