Hip hop in five languages

Alfred Paul, better known as Pauly Rhymes

Adding a new spin to the hip hop genre, 24-year-old Alfred Paul, better known as Pauly Rhymes, is an upcoming Bloemfontein artist like no other. Hip hop music, also called rap, is a music genre developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans in the late 1970s, which consists of a stylised rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. Paul adds a uniqueness by composing all the languages he speaks, including Afrikaans, English, Zulu, Xhosa and Sesotho, into one song.

Paul started his music career as a hobby at the age of 16 and has since been composing and writing his own music that he makes available to the public to download or to stream. “My passion for music came at the age of 15. I always used to listen to music motivating myself to make music, because it is kind of an escape from everyone and everything. I first started making music with my friends but as I grew closer and closer to it, my friends started falling out and only I continued with it. I loved the reaction of people, many gave me positive feedback on my work,” said Paul.

Working hard on his craft, Paul aims to one day perform among South Africa’s best, such as Kwesta and Emtee. “Some of my goals are working with some of the top artists in Bloemfontein like Castino, Thwenny Thwenny, BlaqZicco x Spandex, Beatholic music group, Naycha and more. The biggest highlight of my career was when I worked with Beatholic music group to release a EP called Tribil Music and working with many talented upcoming artists is always a big deal for me as I believe I do not know everything but I learn every day,” he concluded.
