Heroes’ Acre should be accessible to all who fought in the struggle

Heroes’ Acre, the burial place of heroes of the anti-apartheid struggle in Phahameng location in Bloemfontein will soon see a make-over of one of the ANC stalwarts laid to rest.

The South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) is working on erecting a monumental burial site for political activist and founder member of the ANC, Thomas Mapikela.

However according council chairperson at the Provincial Heritage Resources Authority Chitja Twala the biggest challenge they face at the site is its accessibility to members outside Bloemfontein. He adds what could be fitting is having a similar site in all the five districts in the province.

ANC stalwarts such as Former Free State premier Winkie Direko, amongst others, are buried on the site. The unveiling of the Mapikela’s monument is expected to take place in September this year.
