Helepi suspects on the run

The four suspects that allegedly robbed and killed the Bloemfontein businessman and father figure, Alfred Helepi, are from the left: Alice Majake, Dira Moreenyane, Nthabiseng Lempe and Banzini Gxamza.

The ongoing murder case of former Moroka Swallows player, Alfred Helepi, has proven that, contrary to popular belief, betrayal sometimes comes from those closest to you.
According to Hawks spokesperson, Sfiso Nyakane, the robbery and murder of Helepi were allegedly masterminded and executed by one of his employees at his tavern in Phahameng, Bloemfontein.
The woman, known as Alice Majake, was revealed to the Hawks as the alleged instigator of the raid that resulted in his murder. The Hawks spokesperson confirmed to Voice that Ntsane Togowe, who was also part of the robbery and handed himself over to the police, alleges that Majake had approached him and three others with the robbery proposal on Helepi. Nyakane said during talks with the Hawks, Togowe alleged that Majake crafted the plan after she was able to state with certainty how much money Helepi had as well as when he would have the money in his possession before depositing it in the bank.
Nyakane also revealed that Togowe is the only one out of the five suspects who is not on the Hawks’ watch list. Togowe handed himself over earlier this year and was released on bail of R1000 on 31 January 2017. His trial is set to begin later in October this year.
“This matter is very difficult, but we have also found out the other suspects are Lesotho nationals who were in the country illegally. We have since looked for them everywhere in the Free State but unfortunately cannot find them. We suspect they may have returned to their home country and we are working with Lesotho officials on the matter,” Nyakane said.
Meanwhile the Hawks are blaming the National Prosecuting Authority for the erroneous release of the suspects as the alleged criminals were apprehended in May 2016, following a successful opposition of bail for the criminals by the Hawks, said Nyakane. The suspects were released following the matter being struck off the roll at the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court and they have since then been on the loose.
Among the fled four are Dira Moreenyane (32), Nthabiseng Lempe (32) and Alice Majake (27), all Lesotho nationals, as well as Banzini Gxamza (33) from Port Elizabeth. Gxamza has a previous criminal charge against him. He was also released on bail despite his arrest in 2012 for housebreaking charges laid against him in Mangaung.
Nyakane said, “While we don’t regard the suspects as armed and dangerous, we do appeal to members of the public to come forth and contact us should they have any information on the suspects.”
The suspects are facing charges of housebreaking and robbery with aggravating circumstances and murder. Anyone with information regarding any of the suspects should contact Captain Babani Skota on 079-509-4998 or Warrant Officer Motlhoua Motshweneng on 082-372-0093. – Pulane Choane
