An investigation has been launched after an alleged illegal consignment of firearm parts, which was imported from the USA, was intercepted by the Hawks in Bloemfontein this week.
This comes after the Hawks’ National Priority Violent Crimes Unit received information that a consignment was on its way to South Africa via a freight shipping service.
According to the Hawks, a multidisciplinary team, comprising of the Technical Response Team and the Local Criminal Record Centre was activated to monitor the delivery of the package in Waverley, Bloemfontein.
The Hawks say preliminary investigation has revealed that the parcel was falsely declared as workshop parts as recorded in the waybill number. However, based on the gathered information a search warrant was obtained, and the shipment was tracked.
Statements were taken from three alleged recipients and other additional electronic equipment were also confiscated pending further investigation. No arrests have been made at this stage.
