Goosen to focus on playing fullback

The Springboks have opted for continuity heading into the Rugby Championship test against Argentina in Salta on Saturday and most importantly will have at least four educated boots in his side.

Elton Jantjies, Johan Goosen, Morné Steyn and Ruan Combrinck can all take the kicking duties if the need arises.

Coach Allister Coetzee made just one injury enforced change to his starting XV for the match with Vincent Koch coming in at tighthead prop.

Koch replaces the injured Julian Redelinghuys in the side with the Lions front rower side-lined for up to six weeks after sustaining a hamstring injury in Nelspruit.

This sees Lourens Adriaanse drafted into the match 23 and will play off the bench.

Lood de Jager retained his spot at lock while Pieter-Steph du Toit remains on the bench.

The only other change to the squad sees the veteran flyhalf, Steyn, replacing Juan de Jongh on the bench.

Coetzee sees says with a short turnaround it’s important to build continuity and he wants Goosen to focus on playing at fullback.

The coach added Steyn’s experience and knowledge of Salta will be of vital importance to the side.

“Both Jantjies and Johan Goosen are basically attacking minded players,” said Coetzee.

“I would like Johan to focus on 15 at this point in time and not see him as a back-up 10 because he’s just joined us a week or so ago.

“There are a few things that he will have to get used to, it’s too important at Test level now for him to be thinking about playing 15 and 10.

“Ten is a pivotal position and you need to have a calm head there, therefore Morné Steyn can come off the bench if needed and do the job for us.

“We expect them to try and put us under pressure with their tactical kicking.

“Morné is an experienced player with good kicking attributes, and he will provide an additional kicking cover for us.”
