Goldfields FET students worried they are falling behind

GALOOME SHOPANE Students at the temporarily closed Goldfields FET college in Welkom are worried they are falling behind their studies.

Conny Tladi, a Business Management student at college says her main concern is her bursary.

She says she has not received the money she used to get to go to school.

Tladi says she cannot meet the 80% attendance requirement policy because she struggles to get to school.

”There are no classes until they reach a decision on the 80% attendance policy.
“I’m very worried, because there’s no way we are going to cover up the lost time,” says the distraughted student.

Lynette Fourie, director of the college, says the problem lies with administration processes.

“The problem is that students apply for a bursary, but then it goes to the district committee of the college, then the particulars have to go to NSFS, which is in Cape town where they check all the documentation. Everything can take up to one or two months before any money is paid over to the college,” says Fourie.

The students have been on strike for three weeks.
