Go avant garde for Bloem’s Met Gala

It’s almost time to don your best suit, or in this case a couture outfit, as the time for Bloemfontein’s very own Met Gala approaches.

The Picnic in the North (PITN) Met Gala, which will take place on 22 March, is the first of its kind for the City of Roses. Its theme is Black Avant Garde.

Apart for giving exposure to and supporting local designers, the PITN Met Gala in conjunction with different stakeholders will give away a bursary to a deserving applicant to realize their dream of becoming a fashion designer. Aspiring fashion designers will be invited to apply for the bursary prior to the event, as the winner will be announced at the Met Gala.

According to founder Shaxe Khumalo, the fact that Bloemfontein did not have an event of this calibre did not sit well with him. “It bothered me that the only time we had to dress up was when we go to weddings or funerals. This is not a party; it’s a day to dress up like a superstar and come and experience the red carpet and VIP lifestyle.”

This glam event is not only an opportunity for fashionistas to flaunt their finery; it will also benefit the ailing fashion industry in the Free State. Ten upcoming fashion designers will be invited to design costumes for ten social media influencers or well-known personalities who in return will promote the work of the designers.

Khumalo said the aim is to give guests a VIP experience of a lifetime, as all guests will be given VIP treatment at the event. “Our set up will consist of numerous VIP long tables, which are intended to encourage interaction between our guests, who might wish to meet new people from different sectors.”
