The time to start unpacking your winter clothes from the top shelf as the temperatures in the city start to gradually drop is fast approaching.
As you get ready to gather your gas heater and appliances for this winter, local gas specialists urge consumers to make sure that it is safe to use.
Delta Gas owners, Marius van Vuuren, Gysie Pienaar and Gys Botes said that ventilating your home when using gas is just as important as using gas from a registered distributor, as most incidents occur when there are leaks caused by old perished pipes or broken seals on cooker tops.
“Make sure that the appliance is serviced before use if it has been stored in the garage during the summer, also ensure that all seals and regulators are still in good condition. When using any gas appliance make sure there is a window or door open for ventilation. When you smell gas, switch off all appliances and check for leaks,” they warned.
It is important to light first and before opening the gas cylinder. “Checking these on a regular basis can prevent dangerous incidents,” they added.
According to the owners, most appliances have a basic manual for directions of use. Consumers need to ensure that the gas they buy is from a registered distributor with the correct seal covering the cylinder valve with a serial number.
“Rogue fillers are approaching the winter market again with bottles that are underfilled that contain impure gas contents. Consumers must also note that when they purchase these illegal gas cylinders and something happens – they will not be covered by their insurance.”
