Gariep has the second best solar radiation

Research has stated that the Gariep region in the Southern Free State has the second best solar radiation in the country.

This is according to Thuso Ramaema, the head of strategic projects at the Department of the Premier. Ramaema says their research proved that they can get more electricity output with the sun’s input to generate energy. He was speaking during a budget roundtable discussion in Bloemfontein last week.

Ramaema says when the project is completed it will produce 600 megawatts of renewable energy.

“In the move towards green economy (as the Free State), we are committed to ensuring that we move the production of power or electricity from carbon and coal-based production to renewable energy production. We think we will be starting with the first production between 2015/16,” says Ramaema.
