Bloemfontein. – It is still unclear why inmates at the Mangaung Correctional Centre in Bloemfontein stabbed two warders at the facility yesterday. G4S’ regional president Andy Baker couldn’t say whether the attacks were related to the strike which saw more than 300 warders fired from the facility two weeks ago.
In yesterday’s incident a warder was stabbed in the face with a teaspoon, while another was stabbed with a metal ring from a lever arch file. Baker could not say how many inmates were involved in the attack.
"I have no reason as the reason for the attack and unfortunately these things (attacks) happen in a prison environment. We are dealing with potentially and in reality, very violent inmates and we have not gotten to the bottom of the attacks," Baker added.
He says investigations into the incident are underway.
