Budget votes for the Free State Government departments officially kick-start today in Kroonstad.

First to come under the spotlight will be the Department of Health, as well as the Department of Social Development.

While MEC for Social Development, Limakatso Mahasa, will be expected to outline her plans for the 2018/19 budget, Health MEC Butana Khompela will be expected to explain how he is going to ensure that his over R10.4 million budget covers the increasing health demands in the province. This includes explaining how he is going to ensure infrastructure development at public healthcare facilities, ensure the provision of critical medication and address the question of staff shortages.

In addition to this, Komphela will be expected to explain why millions are still being pumped into private ambulance services such as the Buthelezi Ambulance Services and the controversial Gupta-linked company, Mediosa.

This department, alongside the Department of Education, is one of the two departments that continue to receive the biggest chunk of the provincial budget.
