The fifth annual Free State Fashion Week (FSFW) started with a first-ever masterclass on Wednesday.

CEO Candy Smith says this year’s event promises to be spectacular. “We decided to take a different approach to the fashion show this year by adding a masterclass.”

Prolific South African designers Gert-Johan Coetzee and Palesa Mokubung will also showcase at the Free State Fashion Week, that takes place at the Naval Hill Planetarium in Bloemfontein from today (28 September) until Saturday (1 October).

Smith adds that she wants to encourage people to get their tickets while they still can. “We have designers from all over the province showcasing their talent. The designers need the support of the community and I would like to encourage people to buy local and wear local. This is something that I am passionate about. We need to give these designers the exposure they deserve,” she says.

She further adds that the aim is also to put these designers on the map, both nationally and internationally.

FSFW has partnered with All Black Soiree and the theme for this year is “Be Human” inspired by surviving a global pandemic and life after a global pandemic, designers are challenged to combine it with African culture and heritage, as well as diversity.
