FS team shines at inter-provincial festival

LEE KHOTLELE

Bloemfontein – The Free State Southern Hockey girls’ A team enjoyed themselves at the inter-provincial hockey under 12 championship that was held in Witbank, Mpumalanga from 30 June until 02 July 2014.

Teams from all around South Africa gathered in the boys’ and girls’ tournament in which Free State was represented by four teams, the girls under 12A and B as well as the boys under 12A and B.

The girls’ A-team manager, Marissa Laing, who was full of praises for her team, said the tournament was good practice for the team.

"There were no final or second/third place winners, because it was a festival. The aim of the festival was to allow the under 12 hockey teams to enjoy themselves and play their hockey," Laing said.

"It was a festival comprising various schools in the country.”

We played against different teams and won all our matches," she added. Goalie, Lael Malherbe from Eunice was one of the outstanding players, having ended the tournament without conceding a goal.

Laing lauded the team’s defense throughout the festival, adding they played like a dream team.

The team consisted of eight players from Eunice, four from Meisieskool Oranje, one from Brebner and one from St Michael’s.

The team was selected following the trials that were held at St Michael’s school earlier this year.
