A 56-year-old taxi driver from Qwaqwa in the Free State was taken into custody on Monday 22 February 2021. This after allegedly sexually assaulting an 18-year-old girl.
The alleged incident took place on Saturday 20 February 2021 when the victim was on her way back home from Phuthaditjhaba. According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, the driver started touching the victim inappropriately along the way and when she asked him to stop, he ignored her.
“She fortunately managed to write down the number on his registration plates and reported the incident to the police, who immediately traced and arrested the suspect,” said Makhele.
Brigadier Moses Mohloare and his team were applauded for their swift response by the District Commissioner of Thabo Mofutsanyana, Major General Jan Tsotetsi.
The suspect will make an appearance in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 23 February 2021, facing a charge of sexual assault. The case is investigated by Phuthaditjhaba Family, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
