FS Rural Development has unclaimed money

Free State Department of Rural Development and Land Reform says it has compensation monies owed to over one hundred residents of Odendaalsrus, near Welkom. The residents were forcefully removed from Marobe location to Kutlwanong (both in Odendaalsrus) 60 years ago. The department’s project co-ordinator for Land Claims Commission, Itumeleng Mashune, says the agreement was to compensate the residents. He confirmed to OFM News that to this day, some have not yet received their money. He says numerous challenges have made the process very difficult.

“It took long because of the previous system that we used for payments. It also gets difficult with people who pass away and people who relocate and move from Odendaalsrus, because tracing them is difficult. We have now changed the system, so things are getting better,” he said.

He urged the beneficiaries to contact the department on 051-430-0444. Those who still reside in Odendaalsrus and nearby areas may go to the Rural Development department, in Welkom for more information.
