Increased house break-ins and ATM crime reports in Mangaung

Mangaung residents are urged to guard against theft while withdrawing money at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs). This comes after the police recorded that there has been a rise of criminal actives around the Mangaung vicinity.

According to the police spokesperson, Sergeant Ikobeng Hlubi, there has been an increase particularly in the number of house break-ins and theft at ATMs.

Hlubi says they receive crime reports from community members who have been robbed at local shopping complexes while withdrawing money from an ATM on a weekly basis.

Hlubi says minimal arrests are being made concerning these criminal activities as victims in most cases fail to identify the robber or the person they asked to assist them.

She says one ATM scam was reported this week where a person asked for assistance from a complete stranger, giving out his bank cards and pin numbers. The police urges Mangaung residents never to give their pin numbers to strangers when seeking assistance.

Hlubi appeals to communities to ensure that their homes, belongings and property are safe, as well as their personal safety when using an ATM.
