The South African Police Services (SAPS) in the Free State have requested the assistance of community members to help trace the family of a deceased man. The body of the unknown man was discovered on Sunday 18 October 2020 when police were summoned to a scene at ZR Mahabane road in Theunissen. The deceased male was was hit by a motor vehicle and his body burnt beyond recognition.
This apparently happened after the suspect was hit by a 34-year-old driver of a BMW vehicle that was travelling from Bloemfontein to Welkom. “When he overtook another vehicle, he hit what he suspected to be an object. He stopped the vehicle to inspect the damage,” said police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele.
According to Makhele the driver was then informed by other drivers that he had hit a man. It was further alleged that as the victim was lying on the ground, his body started burning as the vehicle caught fire. The driver then immediately reported the incident to the police.
“The deceased is still kept at the Welkom government mortuary. The police are therefore looking for his relatives to come forward for identification purposes. He was wearing leopard-print clothes, yellow and black in colour,” concluded Makhele.
