Godfrey Itumeleng Sani (48), a resident of Theunissen in the Free State, was sentenced to serve life in jail after he murdered his girlfriend on 4 November 2019.
The incident took place in Tshepong, Theunissen. The lifeless body of 45-year-old Maria Morakane Mkhuamathe was discovered at around 13:00 on 4 November 2019 by her two daughters. According to police spokesperson, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele, Mkhuamathe was found on her bed, strangled with a rope and her hands and feet tied with cuffs.
The case was assigned to Sergeant Godfrey Magwa of the Theunissen Detectives, and a case of murder was registered. An arrest was made shortly after and Sergeant Magwa worked around the clock to gather the needed and relevant information to ensure justice is served for the victim.
“The suspect has since been in custody and was found guilty on Thursday 13 May 2021. He was later sentenced to life imprisonment by the Virginia High Court,” said Makhele.
According to him the Provincial Commissioner of Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, welcomed the sentence.
“Gender Based Violence is one of our priority crimes which sees women and children being abused and murdered either by their partners and/or relatives who should be protecting them. This sentence will serve as a deterrent to others. Women are meant to be loved and protected, not abused,” said Motswenyane.
