FS illustrator talks art and design

Well-known Free State-born illustrator and graphic designer, David Tshabalala.
Well-known Free State-born illustrator and graphic designer David Tshabalala’s work has captured the hearts of South Africans, most notably through projects such as his popular Davetionary series, illustrating prominent figures and moments in popular culture.
His love for art and design, and the freedom of expression that comes with it, started at a very young age. Tshabalala, who also goes by the pseudonym Slaying Goliath, gets the opportunity of telling stories through graphic design. “I feed off everyday life. I consume a lot of information and things that happen in popular culture. I then use all of this information and package it into something visual that the audience can resonate with.”
The Central University of Technology graduate started his own branding and design company, Suketchi, with his former boss Sarah-Jane Boden in 2015, and has since been a sought-after graphic designer and illustrator in South Africa.
According to Tshabalala, the work young and talented creatives in South Africa are producing, is definitely right up there with international creatives. “Our rich culture and diversity mean our work is always so layered and textured. We have such a rich aesthetic,” he added.
