The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation will join millions of South Africans to celebrate the 24th edition of Heritage Day under the theme: “Celebration of the centenary of Tata Nelson Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu”.
Through these celebrations South Africans will be encouraged to cherish our country’s rich and diverse cultural heritage as articulated in the Freedom Charter: “The doors of learning and culture shall be opened…All the cultural treasures of mankind shall be open to all, by free exchange of books, ideas and contact with other lands.”
This year’s Heritage Month will be celebrated through the promotion of traditional attire, cuisine, diverse cultural expressions and indigenous languages. Discussions around what constitutes our heritage both tangible and intangible, movable and immovable, cultural and natural are expected to take place alongside debates on the live and time of Tata Mandela and Mama Albertina Sisulu.
The Provincial Heritage Day Celebrations will take place on 22 September 2018 at the Ficksburg Sportsground, starting at 09:00.
“The Department encourages our people to cherish their rich and diverse cultural heritage as articulated in the Freedom Charter that, the doors of learning and culture shall be opened and that all the cultural treasures of mankind shall be open to all, by free exchange of books, ideas and contact with other lands,” said MEC Mathabo Leeto.
