The Free State Health Department is expected to respond to detailed questions on a new tender to procure private ambulance services.
This comes after OFM News discovered that the department is in the process of renewing a tender for ambulance services.
The service agreement between the Free State Health Department and Buthelezi Ambulances – that was shrouded in controversy – is expected to expire in December. This province and the North West Health departments are the only two in the country that outsource ambulance services despite having been placed under administration. Both provinces are under contract with Buthelezi Ambulances.
The cash-strapped Free State department came under fire for paying millions per month and invoices from the service provider that amount to thousands for the transfer of a patient from one hospital to another within Bloemfontein. The ambulance service cost the department approximately R6.5 million per month.
