FS community health workers hoping for answers in 7 days

In the next seven days, some 50 community healthcare workers from Bloemfontein are hoping to receive a response from the Health Department on whether they will keep their jobs or not. They were staging a sit-in this morning in Bophelo House, the headquarters of the Free State Health Department.

The workers are frustrated over the on-going crisis in the provincial health system. TAC campaigner, Mary-Jane Matsolo says the department sent five representatives. "The MEC and the Department Head were not at the meeting today. They said what they will try and do is get us a meeting with the MEC in the next seven days. They will try and get us a meeting with him face to face because they are not in the position to give us answers," added Matsolo.

A demonstration was held throughout the night last night to highlight the urgent need for action to address the collapsing health system and in particular draw attention to the non-payment and uncertain employment status of community healthcare workers in the province.
