Renowned Bloemfontein tattoo artist – and owner of Tattoo Republic – Costa Ludick, is not only a master with the tattoo gun, but rather a multi-talented artist who creates music as well. Bloemfontein Courant spoke to the artist following the release of his single, Aksum.
“It’s hard to pinpoint,” said Ludick, describing his musical style. “It’s more or less between techno, deep house, minimal house and deep deck,” he said. “It’s an underground kind of sound”, adding that his music has a darker feel to it, “but still is groovy”.
Ludick explained that he has been a DJ for around 20 years, but prioritised his tattoo business several years ago. He also stated that he has been producing music for around two years. “I dabbled in it around 13 years ago, but then I got too busy with the shop,” he said.
The artist wants to stay true to his unique sound, and will only perform live if the venue and the audience is right. “If the gig is right, then I’ll perform,” he said. Ludick explained that finding a venue that suits his sound is difficult, which led him to produce his music for streaming platforms.
Ludick has had a love for both art and music since he was at school, and said: “It is my form of meditation and relaxation, I find it therapeutic in a way.”
He currently has around ten songs out, as well as a few songs signed to music labels. Ludick is also working on several singles, and is looking to release an EP (extended play) or two.
“I want to do a full album, where everything tells a story,” he also added.
Ludick’s music is available to stream on Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube, and Soundcloud.
“On Soundcloud I’ll do a little pre-release so I can get some feedback and see what I need to tweak,” he said.
