You might know her from South Africa’s most viewed and very popular reality show, Idols South Africa or have watched her perform at the Free State Arts Festival but twenty-two-year-old Shanice May has far bigger plans in store.
The Bloemfontein-born singer and actress of late has landed a one-year contract in the South African soap opera, Isidingo, which premiered on SABC 3 in July 1998 and is broadcast on SABC 3 from Mondays to Fridays at 19:00.
May had the people of Bloemfontein glued to their screens when she first appeared on Idols and sang a winning rendition of Drake’s Hotline Bling, which earned her a golden ticket to take part in the competition where she made it to the solo auditions in 2016.
According to May her acting career started when she featured in a play at the Free State Arts Festival where she played a leading role. Her talent was spotted and she got signed by Star Quality Actors’ management. “It’s been a really cool experience as it is my TV debut. I am really happy that I got a role in a well-known South Africa soapie. It was cool meeting all the well-known people,” May said.
When May is not busy developing her acting career she is busy working on her music as she plans to release a single this year. She is making her mark in the SA entertainment industry, so be on the lookout for her as her first on-screen appearance in Isidingo will be airing in April this year. – Pierce van Heerden
