An entry-level computer and an ear for good music is what kick-started a local music producer and DJ’s career in the industry.
The 30-year-old Romario Smith started his music production journey in 2018 while studying Music Theory in Pretoria. He recalls playing the piano in church before he moved on to play for a few jazz and Neo Soul bands.
“My recent highlight is that I released my EP on one of South Africa’s top record labels, Soul Candi, late last year, and the name of the EP is called – ‘Sentiment of a music lover’,” he expressed.
Affectionately known as Uncle-R, the dedicated musician said he spends most of his time in the studio. He plays around with music software while learning more about sound design.
“Inspiration comes in different ways. I always make an example that I produced my first hit song with an entry level computer that was given to me by a friend,” he said as he described his humble beginnings.
Smith added that his growth has been organic throughout the years. “My goal is to put out good music, and whoever has a good ear and stumbles upon my music, will definitely be hooked forever,” he said.
Locals can look forward to the release of his latest project which will feature artists like Chymamusique and Afrotraction. This is set to drop on 14 February 2025.
