An unknown number of suspects are still at large after a fresh produce market in Welkom was robbed earlier today.
The incident took place at about 06:00 this morning, and the suspects fled with an undisclosed amount of money and a pistol.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Thandi Mbambo, said it is alleged that the men entered the market wielding pistols as well as an assault rifle, which were pointed at the security officers, tellers and clients.
“The robbers forced the security guards to the teller’s office where they managed to disarm one of the security officers and took an undisclosed amount of money from the business,” said Mbambo.
The suspects fled the scene in a white Mercedes Benz with no registration plates. They also used another vehicle of which the make and model are unknown at this stage.
A case of robbery has been opened at the Welkom SAPS. No injuries were reported.
“Any person with information that might assist the police to trace the suspects, can contact Lt. Col. Mokgethi Khapola of the Welkom SAPS’ Detective Unit on 082 684 4890,” concluded Mbambo.
