SABRINA DEAN – Central South African’s should brace themselves for freezing conditions across large parts of the region this weekend, with light snowfall also expected over parts of Lesotho and the Northern Cape.
SA Weather forecaster Michael Nethavhani says a cold front will make landfall in the Western Cape today and is expected to spread to the central interior, reaching the Free State and North West by around midday tomorrow.
He says cold conditions are expected across the Northern Cape with maximums in places like De Aar only reaching nine degrees Celsius, accompanied by the possibility of light rain and even snowfall.
"No rain is expecte for the Free State province. The coldest maximum is expected for the southern Free State, where Fauresmith is expected to reach a maximum of 12 or 13 degrees tomorrow," he says.
He says the central Free State will reach high’s of about 14-15 degrees, while the northern Free State is expected to reach about 18 degrees Celsius.
The weather service has also issued a veld fire warning for today in the Northern Cape due to warm winds of up to 45km/h ahead of the cold front.
Nethavhani says later in the weekend, winds are expected to turn cold and the wind-chill factor will definitely feature in the freezing conditions still expected to last through Sunday before starting to recover from Monday. "On Sunday, minimum temperatures are likely to go below zero – the central Free State, western Free State and the whole of Northern Cape will be freezing," he says.
He says maximum temperatures in the north eastern Free State and the eastern part of the North West province will also still be dropping on Sunday.
