Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe will visit Albert Moroka Secondary School in Thaba Nchu and Kgauho Secondary School in Botshabelo on Tuesday, 01 July to motivate matric learners during their Winter School classes.
About 16 000 Free State grade 12 learners will form part of the 2014 Winter School which will commence on 30 June and end on 18 July 2014.
This initiative forms part of the Provincial Strategy on Learner Attainment (PSLA) which aims to improve grade 12 scholastic performance.
At the beginning of the year during the release of the 2013 National Senior Certificate (NSC) results, Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe committed the department to obtain a 90% pass rate and 40% bachelors’ passes.
The winter school which comprises of residential and walk-in centres is targeting grade 12 learners in the following categories:
• Schools at risk
• Potential 100% schools
• Big enrolment subjects ( Mathematics, Physical Science, Accounting, Mathematical Literacy, Life Sciences, Economics, Business Studies, English FAL, Sesotho HL)
It is exactly three months before the commencement of matric examinations.
“We urge all grade 12 learners especially from underperforming schools to attend classes so that they improve their marks and their chances of passing matric,” Makgoe said.
Similar classes will be conducted during the September holidays after the trial examinations, as well as grade 12 preparation camps in October.
The 2013, 87.7% provincial NSC pass rate can be attributed in part to the successful implementation of this programme in 2013 – which largely focused on big enrollment subjects.
Expert tutors have been meticulously selected by principals to participate in this programme.
Makgoe said the department will deploy special monitoring teams to ensure the programme runs effectively and that quality teaching and learning happens. Learners will receive free lunch and in some areas transport assistance will be provided to them.
Makgoe called on parents to ensure that learners attend these classes. He also encouraged learners to establish study groups of four or five friends so that they can work through the materials in preparation for the final examinations.
