Free State Treasury cuts down on expenses

Free State MEC of Finance, Gadija Brown

Irregular departmental spending has been investigated, resulting in 3,000 cases throughout the Free State.

This is according to Free State MEC of Finance, Gadija Brown, during the provincial budget speech broadcast on social media today.

“Irregular expenditure is set to be reduced. There have been investigations in various departments including Health and Education, among others, and we concluded that the 3,000 cases have made up R517 million in expenditure,” she explained.

Brown also expressed that R20 billion would be used to fund various departments that were hardest hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This amount is not new but comes from existing allocations of different departments to be reprioritised into departments that were affected by the pandemic,” she said.

The reprioritisation is made possible by the reduction in several services that include catering, entertainment and travel expenses during this time.
