A driver was arrested after being caught driving his Nissan Qashqai at 175km/h in a 120km/h zone yesterday afternoon on the N1 Glen about 40km outside Bloemfontein.
According to Saki Mohono, spokesperson for the police, roads and transport department, the man claimed that he was in a hurry to take his sick father to the hospital in Bloemfontein.
“On the same stretch of the road Free State Traffic officers trapped another speedster doing 180km/h in his Toyota Corolla. Both speedsters were taken to Glen Police station where they were charged with negligence and reckless driving. They are expected to appear in court on Monday,” he said.
Mohono added that the MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Butana Komphela welcomed the arrests of these two motorists as it will send a strong message to would-be speedsters that such behaviour would not be tolerated in the province.
“Our traffic officers will continue to enforce law on our roads throughout the year. We would like to appeal to motorists to obey road rules at all times. Those who choose not adhere to road rules and regulations will face the full might of the law,” he added.
This statement was issued by the corporate communications department of the Free State department of police, roads and transport.
