Fraudsters sentenced after trying to buy bakkie with false documents


Thulasize Thamsonqa Mbambo (36) and Phumlani Howard (36) have been sentenced in Welkom Magistrate’s Court after being found guilty of submitting false documents in order to purchase a Toyota Fortuner vehicle.

The Hawks report that on 22 August 2018, a complainant who works at Oranje Toyota in Welkom, received a call from someone who said that he wanted to purchase a Toyota Fortuner.

The complainant then e-mailed the potential client the application form and the accused e-mailed it back with all the necessary documentation. It was later established that the documents were fraudulent.

“Two suspects were arrested on 27 August 2018 by the Serious Commercial Crime Unit of the Hawks when they intended to collect the vehicle at Oranje Toyota, Welkom. An investigation followed and another case docket was opened and linked from Kroonstad. The potential loss is valued at R620 185.95 in Welkom and R626 001.27 in Kroonstad,” reads the statement.

Thulasize Thamsonqa Mbambo (36), was sentenced on 1 count of Fraud, 12 years imprisonment of which 5 years are suspended for 5 years. And Phumlani Howard (36) was sentenced on 2 charges of  fraud and sentenced for both counts taken together for sentencing: 15 years imprisonment of which 5 years are suspended for 5 years.
