Four killed, including boy (4), in Free State crash


Edenburg – Four people, including a child, were killed in the early hours of this morning when their vehicle collided head on with a truck on the N1 south near Edenburg in the Free State.

ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said emergency workers managed to free a woman, the only survivor from the light motor vehicle, with multiple injuries.

She was in a critical condition and paramedics treated her for numerous fractures and possible head injuries.

Paramedics on the scene explained that the woman indicated to them that she is pregnant.

A boy, believed to be four years old, was found some 20 meters away from the vehicle. It is believed he was flung from the vehicle during the collision. He was declared dead at the scene.

Paramedics explained that the impact completely crushed the vehicle and the scene was scattered with debris.

The driver of the truck was found on the scene and treated for shock. He did not sustain any physical injuries.

The exact cause of the incident is not yet known. The incident was handed over to the local authorities for investigation.
